The Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup will open this coming Friday, February 8, 2013. The conference is import-laden, as each team hired imports as a reinforcement for the All-Filipino squad.
According to the PBA, each team are required to field an import, most players came from the United States and some of them have even played with the world’s most popular league, the NBA.
Other team’s imports were also part of the PBA for the past few years and returns for another stint in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Here’s the list of imports and some of their background:
San Mig Coffee Mixers: Matt Rogers
Matt Rogers is a former Southwest Baptist University player. He was considered as an able replacement to San Mig’s former import Denzel Bowles where they won the PBA Commissioner’s Cup last season.
Rogers was picked fourth-over-all by Texas in the 2010 NBA Development League draft. He averaged 7.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in two D-League seasons.
Petron Blaze Boosters: Renaldo Balkman
Renaldo Balkman is a former New York Knicks’ forward. He stands 6-foot-8 forward with an average 3 points and 1.9 rebounds during the 2011-2012 NBA Season. He was released by the Knicks last February 17, 2012 to make way for J.R. Smith.
Air21 Express: Michael René Dunigan
Michael Dunigan was a former University of Oregon varsity player, from the year 2008 and 2010. He also made a short stint in the NBA with Memphis Grizzlies for one month only.
Dunigan also played with the Israeli Basketball Super League team Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem and the BC Kalev/Cramo in Estonia. Dunigan is just a 23-year-old solid player according to Air21 coach Franz Pumaren.
Alaska Aces: Robert Dozier
Robert Dozier was a former team mate of Derrick Rose, Chris Douglas-Roberts and Joey Dorsey who played as a power forward and has started with all 99 games with the Memphis Tigers during the 2007-08 season, all the way to the NCAA Tournament championship although lost to Kansas Jayhawks.
Dozier stands at 6-foot-9 and can a very good shooter from the outside aside from his rebounding skills.
Barako Bull Energy Cola: Evan Brock
Evan Brock was a former Southeast Asian player having played with the Indonesia Warriors in the ASEAN Basketball League. According to Barako Bull Coach Rajko Toroman and Bong Ramos, Brock is one of the most aggressive and a team player at the same time.
Barangay Ginebra San Miguel: Herbert Hill
Herbert Hill was selected in the second raound of the NBA draft in 2007 by the Utah Jazz but traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. Last 2012, he spent his last season in South Korea averaging 19.1 points, 9,5 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks for the Daegu Orionas.
On his season with the Korean league, he was considered as one of the most productive imports in the league. Herbert Hill stands at 6-foot-10.
GlobalPort Batang Pier: Justin Williams
Justin Williams is one of the most explosives shot-blocker and rebounder while playing for the University of Wyoming during the 2006 Mountain West Conference.
He recorded a triple-double in a second round game against the University of Utah with 10 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 blocked shots.
Meralco Bolts: Eric Dawson
Eric Dawson is the former NBA D-League’s Impact Player of the Year while playing for the Austin Toros. He averaged 17.2 points, 10.7 rebounds, and shoots 56% from the field.
Dawson stands at 6-foot-9 and considered by Meralco Coach as an intelligent and good team player, making his team mates involved on their offense.
Rain or Shine Elasto Painters: Bruno Sundov
Bruno Sundov will the tallest import in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup 2013 as he stands at 7-foot-3. Sundov have already played with five different NBA teams.
In tune-up games against the Mixers, Sundov was able to produce a total of 21 points and dominated the boards with 16 rebounds to win against their opponent with the final score at 93-82.
